BSNL Upcoming SPAM

In recent developments, two major Indian telecom providers have announced AI-powered solutions aimed at enhancing digital security and combating unwanted communications. Airtel led the charge with its spam detection tool, followed by BSNL’s announcement of an upcoming anti-scam solution.

Airtel’s AI-Powered Spam Detection Tool

On September 25, Bharti Airtel launched an AI-powered spam detection tool. The system is designed to flag suspected spam calls and messages in real-time for Airtel users. According to the company, the tool is automatically activated for all subscribers at no additional cost. It employs a proprietary algorithm to classify communications as “Suspected SPAM” by analyzing various parameters such as caller usage patterns, call frequency, and duration. This data is then cross-referenced with known spam patterns for identification.

Airtel’s Managing Director and CEO, Gopal Vittal, commented on the launch, stating, “Spam has become a menace for customers. We have spent the last twelve months to solve this comprehensively. Today marks a milestone as we launch the country’s first AI-powered spam free network that will shield our customers from the continuous onslaught of intrusive and unwanted communications.”

BSNL’s Upcoming AI/ML Solution for Scam Prevention

Following Airtel’s initiative, BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) has now revealed its own plans in the AI space. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the state-owned telecom company announced: “Good news! We’ve cracked it. A breakthrough AI/ML-powered solution is in its final stage, designed to identify, neutralize & eliminate scams before they reach you. The future of digital security is #ComingSoon. Big reveal at India Mobile Congress 2024.”

KYC is a term familiar to everyone who deals with financial accounts in some form or other. Whether it is setting up a new bank account for yourself or getting a new SIM card, you have surely come across this mandatory procedure.

For the unversed, KYC stands for Know Your Customer or Know Your Client.

In the present digital age when almost every aspect of our life is digitally connected, the process of KYC isn’t left behind. The Department of Telecommunication, India has now made possibilities for e-KYC. If you want to apply for a new SIM card, you can get it done paperless with an e-KYC.

Now, let’s go through how options like e-KYC help you to get a SIM connection effortlessly.

KYC is one of the primary telecom reforms and with options of e-KYC and Self-KYC, streamlining of mobile connections is pretty easy. On the other hand, if you want to switch from a prepaid plan to a postpaid, you can easily do it through OTP-based conversion.

e-KYC: Along with Self-KYC and OTP-based prepaid/postpaid conversion, KYC reforms also provide you the option of Aadhaar-based e-KYC. It is a paperless process where telecommunication companies verify your details from your Aadhaar for the price of Rs 1(incl. GST).

Self-KYC: When it comes to Self-KYC, you can choose to complete your KYC online with your Aadhaar. The process will verify your identity and DigiLocker. It authenticates your document and consequently, you can get your new SIM card.

OTP-based conversion: When you want to switch from a prepaid plan to a postpaid plan, you can use OTP authentication. This allows you to ensure that your data is not misused and the switch is done by you.

Starlink, SpaceX’s broadband satellite internet service is now available in Zimbabwe. The African nation can now avail of Starlink services for US$50 a month, along with the setup kit being available for US$350. Starlink took to the social media platform X and updated about the same on September 7, 2024. The same was reposted by Elon Musk. POTRAZ, Zimbabwe’s telecom regulator earlier approved the licensing of Elon Musk’s Starlink in May 2024.

According to reports, local companies in Zimbabwe have obtained government approvals to be Starlink’s local resellers. However, the company’s website states that they are doing direct sales to customers, with an additional US$23 for shipping.

Starlink also offers the Starlink Mini, and customers opting for it can avail of a cap of 100 Mbps for a monthly subscription of US$30. The setup kit for the Starlink Mini is priced at US$200. This package is ideal for basic internet use and smaller households

With Starlink making its way to the Zimbabwe market, users will get a sigh of relief. This is because Zimbabwe doesn’t have any land-based network and data prices are high.

Emmerson Mnangagwa, President of POTRAZ states that Starlink would result in the deployment of high-speed, low-cost, low-earth orbit internet infrastructure throughout Zimbabwe particularly in the rural areas.

The Department of Telecommunication (DoT), India recently announced that the first rules of The Telecom Act 2023, ‘Digital Bharat Nidhi’ is now in effect. The department took to the social media platform X and announced the same through an update.

The Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia reposted the post by the Department of Telecommunication and expressed that the new measure reflects their commitment to ensure equal access to telecom services. He also stated that with this, the nation is marching towards building a digitally connected Bharat and an #Atmanirbhar telecom sector.

‘Digital Bharat Nidhi’ was formerly known as the Universal Service Obligation Fund. The motive of the newly announced rules is to enhance telecommunication services in remote and underserved areas. With this, women, persons with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged communities will also be benefited.

The role of Digital Bharat Nidhi is to fund projects that aim to improve telecom services, which include the likes of mobile and broadband connectivity while boosting the telecom sector. The Act and its provisions are a tool to take forward India towards the goal of becoming Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Now, let’s have a look at some of the salient aspects that the Digital Bharat Nidhi focuses on:

  • To fund projects that will provide telecommunication services and necessary equipment, and thus enhance connectivity.
  • It also aims to support innovation, research, and the development of indigenous technologies.
  • It aims to encourage startups in the telecom sector and setting standards for the same.
  • Furthermore, the act also promotes green technologies and sustainable practices.
  • Another goal of the act is to create a bridge between academia, research institutions, and startups, resulting in an overall growth of the industry.

The act makes it mandatory that any recipient offers telecommunication services on an open and non-discriminatory basis.

The Telecommunications Act, 2023 was earlier passed by the Parliament in December 2024. The presidential assent was passed on December 24, 2023, and it was published in the official Gazette on the same day. The act includes provisions for the Digital Bharat Nidhi in Sections 24-26 of Chapter V.

Reliance Jio, India’s leading telecom service provider, has recently implemented significant changes to its offerings. The company has expanded its entertainment domain services by introducing new products like JioTV OS, JioHome, and Jio TV+.

Jio also offers various prepaid plans catering to entertainment needs, including some with free Netflix subscriptions. These plans have been popular due to the rare inclusion of complimentary Netflix access.

However, Jio has now announced price hikes for these prepaid plans that come with free Netflix subscriptions. The company has also made substantial changes to its mobile tariffs, with price increases ranging between 12-27 percent. Additionally, Jio has restricted access to unlimited 5G services.

This tariff hike comes after a gap of two and a half years for Reliance Jio. The new pricing structure has been effective since July 3, 2024, marking a significant shift in the company’s pricing strategy.

These changes reflect Jio’s efforts to balance its service offerings with market realities, potentially impacting its position in the competitive telecom and digital entertainment sectors.

Let’s look at the plans offering Netflix subscriptions, whose price has increased, and the offers that the plans include.

Rs 1,099 plan is now Rs 1,299: The Rs 1,099 Reliance Jio Prepaid plan’s price has been hiked by Rs 200. The new plan is priced at Rs 1,299. This plan will offer Rs 149 monthly free Netflix Mobile subscription and a validity of 84 days. Along with it, you can avail of 2GB mobile data per day, unlimited voice calls, and 100 SMS per day.

Rs 1,499 plan is now Rs 1,799: The Rs 1,499 plan has received a hike of Rs 300, thus the new plan amounting to Rs 1,799. With this plan, you will gain a free Netflix Basic subscription and a validity of 84 days. The plan offers 3GB mobile data per day, unlimited voice calls, and 100 SMS per day.

Reliance Jio has increased their lowest recharge plans by about 27 percent or Rs 19 and the annual recharge plans by about 20-21 percent or Rs 340. On the other hand, medium-range mobile service plans have undergone tariff hikes of about 19-21 percent. All of these changes are now live on the Jio website and My Jio app.
