Boston Dynamics today releases a video of its humanoid robot, Atlas. In the video, the robot can be seen picking up heavy objects while keeping its balance. It showcases the tight grip of the robot as it can even make a 180- degree jump without dropping the object.
It is a 1.5-meter-tall robot with 28 hydraulically actuated joints that weigh 89 kg. It possesses outstanding speed, dynamic balance, and a certain confidence and fluidity of motion, in addition to some athletic qualities most of us would find difficult to duplicate.
Next Atlas can also be seen forming a bridge from a 2 x 8 block of wood and then it picks up the bag and moves upon the bride to deliver the bag to the second level of the structure for which he can be seen jumping at a height and throwing the bag.
The robot is even capable of pushing heavy objects without toppling over the edge and it pushes the heavy crate down onto the floor and uses it as a platform for an inverted 540-degree multi-Axis flip.
Atlas consists of a color camera, and a depth-sensing time-of-flight camera in its head, which it utilizes to create a 3D map of its surroundings. Along with this, the visual system must work extra hard during this test as the team already put certain information into the robot like the process of bridging, running, jumping, pushing and performing stunt.
The Atlas engineer is very happy with the robot and hopes that it doesn’t wind up in the wrong hands.
