Early in 2022, Google announced that the company will invest $1 billion in Airtel of which $700 million was intended to receive a 1.28% stake in the company. Now the parent company of Google, Alphabet Inc. is collaborating with Bharti Airtel with a vision to bring affordable internet to the remote villages of the country.

The project named Taara, which is part of the innovation lab of Alphabet Inc. called X, will be taking forward this vision of the company and plans to provide high-speed internet to users from remote areas. The aim is to deploy the internet services via beams of light and as per what is stated by the company, Taara’s light beams will provide its users with fiber-optic internet without the use of cables.

Mahesh Krishnaswamy, the person who leads Taara has stated that the technology has progressed significantly, and with Airtel, the company is almost there to start the large-scale deployment of the technology and its services in the country. Apart from Airtel, Taara has also made deals with Bluetown in India, another internet provider. Project Taara is also under development in 13 other countries, including countries like Australia, Fiji, and Kenya.

Airtel CEO, Randeep Sekhon has added that with the help of the latest technology developed by Taara, the company will also be able to deliver faster internet services in urban areas as well and is less expensive compared to burying fiber-optic cables under the ground.
