Google Might Release Android 16 Earlier Than Previous Versions: Likely In Q2 Of 2025

Every year Google releases a new Android version. This year Android 15 will be the latest Android version that will be released by the company. Vivo has already unveiled its latest Funtouch OS 15 based on Android 15 yesterday. After Android 15, the next will be Android 16 which will be released next year.

Today Android Authority has shared a major update about Android 16. The publication has shared few evidences that hints that Android 16 may arrive earlier than the previous Android versions. The previous Android versions usually arrived in Q3 or Q4 of a particular year but Android 16 may arrive in Q2 of 2025.

In the Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) for Android 15, Google twice referred to “25Q2 ” as the next release of Android. It is observed that the company has internally started to use dates to reference Android releases. For Android 14 QPR2 was referred to as 24Q1, Android QPR3 was known as 24Q2, Android 15 is 24Q3 while upcoming Android QPR1 is referred to as 24Q4.

Going by this reference technique, 25Q2 suggests the launch timeline of the next major release of Android. Some Google engineers have also left their comments in AOSP that also hint towards the same launch timeline of Android 16.

The above comments show that the engineers here are talking about API changes that are being deferred to the 25Q2 window or that can be landed until the 25Q2 edition. Since no new app-facing system behavior or API changes are seen in QRPs, hence it is believed that 25Q2 is being referred to Android 16.

All this evidence strongly suggests that Android 16 could likely be released in Q2 of 2025. Q2 refers to April, May, and June months, lets see in which month we will get to see this latest Android version.
