Is Narendra Modi wiping his face with the tricolour?- Fact Check

As this picture of Narendra Modi went viral in 2016, a lot of netizens were confused about whether this was real, fake, or an issue. This post clears up any misconceptions and fact-checks the picture.

There is a complaint filed against the PM in Puducherry for his action of wiping his face with the Indian flag at Janpath, New Delhi during a Yoga session. The act was caught on camera and is triggering the netizens.

On Yoga Day, Narendra Modi was dressed in a simple kurta and Pyjama sporting a stole around his neck, designed in Indian tri-colours – white, saffron, and green.

The case against the Prime Minister was filed by Puducherry Dalit activist V Sundar, at Orleanpet Police station for insulting the national flag. V Sundar also happens to be the administrator of the WhatsApp group Puducherry Poraligal Kuzhu.

However, according to the Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971 as amended in 2003, this act does not constitute breaking any law. According to clause 4(e):

“using the Indian National Flag:- (i) as a portion of costume, uniform or accessory of any description which is worn below the waist of any person; or (ii) by embroidering or printing it on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, undergarments or any dress material.”

Therefore, wiping his face with a shawl which was tricolour is not an offense.
