Vikram-I by Skyroot Aerospace steps closer to its anticipated launch with the successful completion of PPT test of Kalam-1200 launch vehicle

Skyroot Aerospace, the Indian private aerospace manufacturer is looking forward to launching their latest creation, the Vikram-I in early 2024. In the latest developments, Skyroot Aerospace updated about significant progress in this endeavor. Skyroot Aerospace successfully completed a critical proof pressure test (PPT) of Vikram-I’s launch vehicle, the ‘Kalam-1200’.

The ’Kalam-1200’ is an ultra-light, high-strength carbon composite structure. During the PPT of Kalam-1200, it was put to simulated combustion pressures of up to 82.5 atmospheres. The success of this test marks a positive leap as the pressure in which the launch vehicle was tested is more than the expected pressure that Vikram-I will face during its ascent.

The Vikram-I’s design holds the capability of carrying about 300 kg of payloads into low earth orbit. It is designed with an all-carbon-fibre body. It also features 3D-printed liquid engines. The Raman Engine will power the Kalam-1200. It also boasts multi-orbit insertion capabilities with the support of the launch vehicle’s orbital adjustment module.

Skyroot Aerospace’s Kalam engines are named after former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam and the Vikram launch vehicles are named after the father of India’s space program, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. The anticipated launch of Vikram-I will mark India’s first orbital launch by a private Indian company.
