India is becoming world defence manufacturer from world defence importer

India keeps the tag of the world’s top importer, but Delhi is now developing as a supplier for global manufacturers.

The Capital is making more equipment for itself.

After appearing as a global hub for manufacturing automobiles, India is making weapons, arms and ammunition warships and planes for sale in international markets now.

‘Make in India’ is also indulged in defence manufacturing and is no more a slippery hallucination.

India is developing as a supplier for international arms manufacturers and is currently making for itself, keeping imports at bay.

Who is the largest defence supplier in India?

Russia was one of the largest defence suppliers in India for around 10 years.

Likewise, France became the second country for importing arms to India, after Russian imports fell by 47% in those 10 years.

According to the research of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) in arms transfer 2021,

However, India and Saudi Arabia are the two largest defence equipment importers between 2017 – 2021.

In the same list, India stands on 23rd rank in exporters among 25 exporters.

Although, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Armenia are the top buyers from India.

Alongside, Italy, Maldives, Russia, France, Nepal, Mauritius, Israel, Egypt, UAE, Bhutan, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Poland, Spain and Chile are the other export destinations for India.

Exportation from India

Indian defence exports have recorded six times more benefits from 2017 – to 2021, growing from Rs 1,520 crores – Rs 8,435 crores.

The items which are exported by India include missiles, the advanced light helicopter, offshore patrol vessels, personal protective gear, surveillance systems and a variety of radars.

In January, the Philippines and India’s BrahMos Aerospace sealed a deal worth $375 million for the Philippine Marines.

To gain three batteries of the BrahMos cruise missile.

BDL is the manufacturer of arms and ammunition and missile systems.

BDL produced a first generation anti-tank guided missile – the French SS11B1 with the help of engineers drawn from Indian Ordnance Factories, DRDO and aerospace industries.
