The post Meet Nearpod’s 2022 Educators of the Year! appeared first on Nearpod Blog.

]]>
Nearpod and Flocabulary are thrilled to announce the five Educator of the Year award recipients! We were blown away by the support from our educator community, receiving over 2.5k nominations and over 4.6k votes.

All ten finalists have contributed greatly to their schools, students, peers, and communities. We are grateful to have each of them in the Nearpod family and incredibly proud.

Without further ado, meet our five Educators of the Year!

Nearpod’s 2022 Educators of the Year

Breaking Barriers

Creates equitable, inclusive learning environments. Tackles obstacles head-on.

Liudmyla Katereniuk

School Director, Ukraine
Lyceum 1 in Mohyliv- Podilskyy town, Vinnytsia oblast

Despite the challenges presented by the ongoing war in Ukraine, Liudmyla has consistently found ways to support and mentor other educators. She has even helped teachers overcome challenges, like finding locations in their town with the power to attend online sessions to ensure that they have the resources they need to provide the best education possible to their students.

As a school administrator, she is constantly developing innovative ways to train teachers, like organizing professional development across multiple schools for more than 20 teachers.

Community Connector

Brings people in the educator community together to collaborate and grow.

Alexa Guy

Instructional Reading Intervention Coach, Florida
Pleasant City Elementary in Palm Beach School District

Under her leadership as an Instructional Reading Intervention Coach, Alexa’s school has implemented a Positive Behavior Systems framework, structure, and incentive store to recognize student efforts and achievement. She has solidified several community partnerships with politicians, non-profits, and community organizations to fund this project, along with several others that benefit her students. As a result of her efforts, the school saw its grade rise from a projected “F” to a “B” in the last school year.

Flocabulary’s Favorite

Uses Flocabulary in extraordinary ways. It deserves the ultimate *mic drop*!

Sherena Small

School Social Worker, Illinois
K-5 Stratton Academy of the Arts in Champaign Unit

Sherena Small is a School Social Worker who has found a passion for using Flocabulary in her SEL classes. She uses Lyric Lab to facilitate her students in writing a class song based on the SEL topics they have learned about (like respect, empathy, active listening, conflict resolution, self-compassion, and kindness). Allowing them to pick the music and use their ideas reinforces concepts and gives them ownership of their learning and an opportunity to learn in a fun and expressive way. A recent class creation was posted on the school’s Facebook page, titled “RESPECT IS LIT!”

Magic Maker

Brings magic to the classroom by fostering a love of learning in students! Always going the extra mile.

Amy Taylor

English & French teacher, West Virginia
Midland Trail High School, Fayette County Schools

Amy’s students look to her for guidance as they make important decisions about their future, and she’s always available to them after they graduate. Not a graduation ceremony is complete without Senior after Senior dedicating large amounts of their final words to her. She can be found running the concession stand to raise money for the National Honor Society scholarship fund she created for her chapter. Or she’s in her classroom planning engaging lessons like author meet and greets, Zoom calls with Holocaust survivors, or planning a live French cooking and culture day with her students. She’s the only National Board Certified teacher at her school and one of just five in her county.

Nearpod’s North Star

Champions Nearpod with other teachers. Always the go-to for Nearpod support and innovative ideas.

Christie Thompson

Social Studies teacher, Georgia
Empower Virtual Program, Coweta County Schools

Christie Thompson moves beyond simply using Nearpod as a presentation tool and really utilizes its possibilities within her classroom. She encourages students to use the “Save to Google Drive” feature to create notes that are transferred to their Interactive Notebooks for review and ownership. During Black History Month, she had students create an interactive Periodic Table of Black history and use Flocabulary to create raps about their chosen individuals, providing effective alternative assessment and cross-disciplinary engagement options. Christie is also an adjunct professor who has incorporated Nearpod into her courses and provided professional development sessions on Nearpod to educators in her county at Empower Virtual and the Coweta County Innovation Summit.

And a big shout out to our five runner-up finalists!

Breaking Barriers: Ashley Cornejo

 • 2nd-grade teacher, North Carolina
 • Oak Grove Elementary in Durham Public Schools

Community Connector: Nolan Grady

 • 9th-grade Math Team Lead, Pennsylvania
 • Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School

Flocabulary’s Favorite Finalist: Jeremy Percich

 • 4th-grade teacher, Hawaii
 • Waihe’e Elementary School in Hawaii Department of Education

Magic Maker Finalist: Sarana McDaniel

 • 2nd-grade teacher, California
 • Taft City School District

Nearpod’s North Star Finalist: Erin Merrill

 • Social Studies Department Chair, Virginia
 • Pennington School in Prince William Co Public Schools

Congratulations, educators!

Congratulations to all of our winners for their hard work and dedication to education. As award recipients, each will get $200, an upgraded Nearpod and Flocabulary subscription, and a personalized shirt!

We are honored to recognize these inspiring educators for their achievements. They showcase the day-in and day-out support, guidance, and love educators give to their students and communities worldwide. Thank you to all the educators who work tirelessly to impact our lives positively. Your efforts truly make a difference.

Streamlined workflow with new integrations and connections

Official launch partner for Google Classroom add-ons!

Streamlining the workflow between teachers’ most commonly used edtech tools has become more important than ever. Google recently announced its newest feature, Classroom add-ons, to simplify use and bring tools together. We’re excited to bring you the Nearpod add-on to make using these two tools easier for teachers and students.

With the new Nearpod add-on, educators can do even more within Google Classroom:

 • Seamlessly assign Nearpod lessons to their entire class or individual students
 • Allow students to join Nearpod lessons without a code
 • View post-session reports and assign a grade
Nearpod and Google Classroom add-on

Excited about this? So are we! Take a deeper dive into learning more about the Google Classroom add-on.

The Google Classroom add-on is available for schools and districts that subscribe to Google’s Workspace for Education Teaching and Learning Upgrade or Education Plus editions. Google Classroom admin must enable Nearpod as an add-on before it is available to be used by teachers and students.

Star Assessment to Nearpod connection

As school leaders seek to minimize the impact of disrupted learning, teachers need more support than ever to meet students where they are at. More than 80 million Star assessments are taken each year to show students’ strengths and weaknesses, but now what? Teachers don’t have the time to create unique lesson plans for every student, and even if they did, where do they find all of those materials?

The Star to Nearpod connection gives teachers insights they can act on right away by recommending high-quality Nearpod lessons, activities, or videos directly in Star. Recommendations to Nearpod resources are based on the Star assessment results of individual students, a small group, or the entire class. Without spending any additional time, teachers know where their students need help and what they can do to make the biggest impact.

Nearpod turns Star assessment data into actionable insights for the classroom, eliminating guesswork and empowering teachers to improve learning outcomes.

This exciting new connection is now available for Star Math, Star Reading, and Start Early Literacy.

Back to School with updates made just for you

We hope you are as excited about these new product updates as we are, after all – they were fueled by your feedback! Teachers are at the center of everything we do, we’re determined to provide you the tools and resources you need so you can focus on doing more of what you love – delivering impactful instruction and positive student outcomes.

Here’s to a great Back to School season — you’ve got this, and we’ve got you!

L.A. Unified Digital Citizenship Nearpod Student Contest https://nearpod.com/blog/la-unified-digital-citizenship-nearpod-student-contest/ Thu, 31 Mar 2022 23:43:12 +0000 https://nearpod.com/blog/?p=19892 For Digital Citizenship Week, we designed a month-long dig cit experience that included a student contest for L.A. Unified School District.

In today’s technological and online world, the importance of practicing good digital citizenship for students is more important than ever. From online etiquette, to safety and privacy protocols, to relationship building through digital tools, students must be taught these key digital citizenship skills in order to be prepared for the world they are living in now. At L.A. Unified School District, Digital Citizenship is a core focus for students and teachers.

Leading the digital citizenship charge at L.A. Unified School District is the Instructional Technology Initiative (ITI). ITI supports schools with 21st century instructional practices through professional learning opportunities to equip educators with the tools and skills needed to leverage technology in purposeful and meaningful ways. As the Senior Customer Success Manager supporting L.A. Unified School District, I’ve had the honor and pleasure of working with ITI to support the implementation and use of Nearpod and Flocabulary throughout the district. Together, we partnered to co-create professional learning opportunities, celebratory engagement events, and district initiatives to amplify their goals of preparing educators with 21st century instructional practices using digital tools.

The month of October is home to Digital Citizenship Week and this year, we designed a month-long digital citizenship experience that included professional learning opportunities, a TwitterChat, school showcase events, and our first ever student contest for L.A. Unified School District. The student contest aimed to center students in the Nearpod experience and create opportunities for students to be the drivers of their own learning.

LA Unified Digital Citizenship Nearpod Student Contest

“Normally, our support for the district is through our educators, but for this student contest, we changed the focus to really bring the students on board because they are the ones we want to empower as digital citizens,” says Dominic Cagouia, the Instructional Leadership Coordinator at ITI.

The contest challenged students to come up with their own original answers to the question, “What makes a good digital citizen?” Students demonstrated their knowledge by answering a variety of Nearpod activities. Through Draw-its, Open Ended Questions, Drag and Drops, and more, students shared their unique perspectives, creativity, and knowledge of how they could have a positive impact on the online world.

LA Unified Digital Citizenship Nearpod Student Contest

The student winner, Adrienne R. a sixth grader from Wilmington Middle School STEAM Magnet, created the winning submission where she inspires other students to think about the impact they might have when engaging with others online and to think twice about sharing information online to protect their privacy. Adrienne worked with the Nearpod Video Creative team to create a Nearpod Original video that will be used as an instructional resource in the Nearpod Library for all educators and students to use across the world.

“Something that I learned [through this process] is that being a good digital citizen is also about being creative, being hard working, and helping others,” said Adrienne. She hopes to “spread positivity around the world and on the internet” through her original Nearpod video.

To celebrate Adrienne’s hard work and winning submission, Nearpod partnered with ITI to host a “World Premiere Launch Party” over zoom where we invited community members to celebrate with a virtual pep rally. From guest speakers, to a student dance performance, a mini rap concert, and the world premiere of Adrienne’s original video, nearly 1,200 students and teachers tuned in to witness the premiere and celebration. To close out this momentous occasion, Nearpod sponsored a pizza party for Adrienne and her class to enjoy and celebrate together.

Nearpod and Flocabulary are proud to partner with L.A. Unified School District. Thank you to all the students who entered the contest. Much appreciation and gratitude to our partners at ITI and Wilmington Middle School for helping make this happen! Congratulations again to Adrienne R. and Ms. Carbajal!

Content Companions

Nearpod EL’s Content Companions are scaffolded versions of lessons found in the Nearpod Library, intentionally built to support ELL students. These lessons have been a staple resource since the beginning, and we are adding 900 more lessons to help teachers routinely differentiate their instruction.

Video Mini-Lessons

Video Mini-Lessons provide teachers with additional ways to teach or re-teach important English language arts, social studies, science, or math concepts using scaffolded content. Each lesson is intentionally built to support ELL students by breaking down key vocabulary before the video begins, providing checks for understanding throughout the video, and ending with a scaffolded practice activity. We are adding 600+ Video Mini-Lessons to Nearpod EL, giving teachers more ways to differentiate their instruction.

Activities

Give your ELL students even more ways to engage in active learning with quick, stand-alone activities intentionally built to break down language barriers around academic subjects as well as provide EL-scaffolded content practice. These scaffolded activities include vocabulary explanations, explicit directions, visual examples, and other embedded language supports to support students in successfully completing rigorous tasks. We are adding 1,800+ stand-alone activities aligned to each of our Content Companions, saving teachers time finding and creating their own resources for pre-teaching, enrichment, and differentiation.

New Program Layout and Content Organization

We’ve made it easier for teachers to navigate, find, and launch Nearpod EL content to encourage routine differentiated instruction for ELL students. Begin by selecting your subject to find content broken down by grade and organized by nationally recognized subject domains (NGSS, Common Core, NCSS). Our new lesson layout page surfaces all the aligned resources available to teachers including a standards-aligned Content Companion lesson, practice activities, video mini-lessons, language supports, SEL lessons*, and Flocabulary videos*.

We are committed to optimizing Nearpod EL to further encourage routine support of ELL students by making it easy to find and deliver scaffolded resources. Nearpod EL will continue to grow and receive updates that enhance the experience for both teachers and students.

What’s new with Nearpod: February 2022 https://nearpod.com/blog/nearpod-updates-winter-february-2022/ Tue, 22 Feb 2022 14:15:43 +0000 https://nearpod.com/blog/?p=18917 At Nearpod, we’re always looking for unique ways to support teachers. This winter, we’re releasing new updates for your favorite Nearpod features, such as Collaborate Board, Time to Climb, and more. Keep reading to see a full list of winter updates and how you can use them in your classroom! Create even more impactful instruction with Nearpod As a teacher, you know how powerful it is when you have an incredibly engaging lesson or classroom discussion. Students are energized, motivated, and excited to learn more which boosts student achievement and outcomes. Great lessons empower classrooms and bring in opportunities to build community, master a new academic concept, and give teachers feedback on exactly where students may need additional support or enrichment. However, creating truly effective lessons that accomplish all of these things at once can be challenging. Many teachers struggle to ensure that every student has a voice in a lesson or classroom discussion. Others may grapple with creating engaging lessons that are also meaningful and purposefully aligned with lesson and curriculum objectives. Students struggle to stay motivated to learn in less engaging or empowering lessons. According to the EdWeek Research Center students and teachers surveyed found that student motivation and morale are lower now than they were prior to the pandemic (2021). 50% of students surveyed self-reported less motivation, and 49% reported a lower morale. The teachers surveyed on the same student motivation and morale reported that 87% of students were less motivated and 82% had even lower morale compared to before the pandemic. To help solve the challenges of low student engagement and morale, we’re excited to announce new Collaborate Board features and Time to Climb enhancements. These incredible updates will make it easier than ever for teachers to re-engage their students and help students feel heard, included, and empowered in the classroom. 1. Collaborate Board’s new media options enable students to add videos, audio recordings, and GIFs to their Collaborate board responses in addition to text and images. For school and district users with a Premium Plus license, teachers will also have the ability to sort student responses into columns so students can organize their ideas. Additionally, Premium Plus users can allow students to thread replies to posts on a Collaborate Board, ensuring classroom discussions are student-centered and give students the opportunity to learn and add to each others’ contributions, providing a platform for true collaboration and communication. 2. Transform quizzes into instructional moments with new Time to Climb enhancements Using games to supplement learning experiences in the classroom is a wonderful way to re-engage students. With the latest updates to Time to Climb, teachers will be able to turn those fun, gamified moments into instructional opportunities. 1. Bring student-centered discussions into Nearpod with Collaborate Board’s newest features

As part of supporting student engagement and impactful instruction, we are introducing a new and reimagined Collaborate Board that encourages student-centered discussions. With these latest updates, Collaborate Board offers:

Using games to supplement learning experiences in the classroom is a wonderful way to re-engage students. With the latest updates to Time to Climb, teachers will be able to turn those fun, gamified moments into instructional opportunities.

Time to Climb is a teacher favorite for gamified quizzes in the Nearpod platform. In this gamified multiple-choice quiz, students answer questions correctly and quickly to race to the top of a mountain.

The Nearpod lesson library has lessons that support differentiation, provides resources to fill in gaps in the core learning and meet the interests of students in the classroom. The new lesson, videos and activities add up to more time working with students and less time searching the web. Our latest release of new lessons, videos, and activities includes:

4. Access student responses in real-time and more with the new Teacher Dashboard

The update to the Teacher Dashboard in a Live lesson is one of those subtle but powerful changes. Everything you have always loved is still there, just in perhaps a slightly different spot, plus everything you didn’t even know you wanted!

The Teacher Dashboard includes a new Menu that keeps your key teacher tools handy but out of the way, such as the option to add an activity on the fly or the option to send your post-session report to your email. But the best tool in that Menu is the Presentation option. This button opens a student view of the Nearpod lesson in a new window. This window can quickly be pushed to another screen for easy viewing from the front of the room leaving the teacher screen private for you.

Quickly and easily access the Whiteboard option from the Teacher Dashboard, allowing you to slide a blank screen in front of your lesson on student devices for an impromptu example or additional explanation. Close it when you are done and move on with the lesson.

But the favorite update only appears when you need it! When you include an Open Ended Question, Matching Pairs, Draw It, Poll, or Quiz in your lesson you will see the new Student Teacher toggle button. The Activity opens in student view automatically, giving you the option to model or provide instructions. Then you can click Teacher to toggle to quickly see student responses. Need to go back and discuss part of the Activity, toggle back to Student. Modeling for students has never been easier!

We’re so excited to see you put these updates to use with your students! Remember to stay up to date with our Nearpod Updates blog post to see what’s new biweekly. We’re always releasing new enhancements, features, lessons, and activities to support you and your students.

Using games to supplement learning experiences in the classroom is a wonderful way to re-engage students. With the latest updates to Time to Climb, teachers will be able to turn those fun, gamified moments into instructional opportunities.

Nearpod Launches Social Emotional Learning Curriculum in Partnership with Common Sense Education to Build Positive, Safe and Empowering Learning Environments

Aligned with state and district initiatives, the suite of more than 130+ ready-to-run lessons equips teachers with the necessary resources to create classrooms filled with teamwork, empathy, self-advocacy, character education, mindfulness and more

Nearpod, today launches its ready-to-run Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) supplemental curriculum to support positive, safe and empowering learning environments. Built from the leading framework by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and developed in partnership with Common Sense Education, the new curriculum is a K-12 solution to facilitate students’ SEL competencies, integrate character education and create meaningful learning experiences for students’ lives in and beyond school.

New research reveals how critical SEL skills are to a child’s development and success. According to a ‘Ready to Lead’ CASEL report, students who receive high-quality SEL instruction achieve, on average, 11 percentile points higher on achievement scores than students who did not receive SEL instruction. Additionally, findings from a survey of 192 schools, 26 districts, and over 100,000 students revealed that SEL skills such as self-management and self-efficacy impact the success of student course outcomes. Developing SEL skills is crucial for life beyond school as well, as research from the Kennedy School showed that occupations that are social skill-intensive grew nearly 12 percentage points over a 22 year period and saw higher wages than jobs that didn’t require a high level of social skills.

With this launch, schools and districts can increase the integration of SEL skills into core classroom learning. Nearpod understands that SEL competencies like teamwork and empathy are inextricable from all aspects of a student’s life, and these competencies are necessary for them to flourish in the personal and professional environments that lie ahead of them. The new supplemental curriculum provides flexible, intentional opportunities for direct instruction in SEL skills.

“We know that an engaged classroom starts with an empowered teacher,” said Jennie Kristoffersen, Chief Academic Officer of Nearpod. “We’re always listening to our insightful community of educators and understand their need to embed SEL instruction into any setting so all students can build positive, safe learning environments. We want to empower our teachers with content from best-in-field partners, like Common Sense Education, while supporting districts to mobilize on social and emotional learning requirements and initiatives.”

The content covers a wide range of SEL topics to build empathy and emotional intelligence for all students, including:

 • SEL Competencies features lessons that include direct instruction in and practice with self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.
 • SEL in Digital Life, created in partnership with Common Sense Education, helps students apply SEL skills to their online lives, promoting integrity, self-control, humility, and courage.
 • Growth Mindset Practices develops crucial skills such as responsible risk-taking, metacognition, thinking flexibly and persistence.
 • Lifelong Learning Strategies focuses on goal setting, balancing obligations, time management and critical thinking.
 • SEL Moments encourage teachers to incorporate social and emotional learning into their daily or weekly routines, with mini-activities that can be a part of any lesson.

Built to address teacher pain points without adding to their workload, the new SEL program features over 130 ready-to-run lessons, with plans to continue expanding the supplemental library for back-school with more opportunities for direct instruction in and integration of SEL competencies. Nearpod developed these lessons to be flexible and easily integrated into existing teacher routines and school schedules.

Learning Labs

To further build students’ SEL skills, Nearpod offers expert-derived, scalable Learning Labs to help teachers reach every student. Districts can prepare their entire staff to traverse the complexities of this content set, with training to help teachers implement restorative practices, teach empathy, name and navigate emotions and more. Mindful implementation is critical to the successful deployment of sensitive content such as SEL, and these lessons showcase how teachers can weave SEL into every lesson to create a lasting effect in their classrooms and beyond.

Districts can utilize Title IV funding to support a well-rounded education with Nearpod’s SEL curricula. Access free sample lessons and explore the new program here.
