India’s UPI Payment Mechanism to be Used in France

At La Seine Musicale in Paris, Indian PM, Narendra Modi announced that from now on, Indian tourists will be able to make payments in France in Indian rupees. The announcement was made upon an agreement with France and India regarding the acceptance of India’s UPI payment mechanism in France. The incorporation will start from the Eiffel Towers and Indians visiting the place, will be able to make payments in rupees, via UPI.

“Be it India’s UPI or other digital platforms, they have brought a huge social transformation in the country and I am happy that India and France are also working together in direction. India and France have agreed to use UPI in France. I will leave after the agreement. However, it is your job to move forward. Friends, in the coming days its beginning will be made from Eiffel Tower which means that Indian tourists will now be able to make payments in Rupees, through UPI, at Eiffel Tower” said Modi.

UPI or Unified Payment Interface is India’s own mobile-based payment system that enables anyone to make payments at any time instantly with the help of the unique virtual payment address created by the user.

To note, in 2022, NPCI(National Payments Corporation Of India) also signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with Lyra, the online payment system of France. This year, in early 2023, an agreement was also signed between India’s UPI and Singapore’s PayNow. NPCI is also planning to extend the UPI services to more countries including the USA, Europe, and also in countries of West Asia.

The recent announcement made regarding the acceptance of India’s UPI in France can be considered a significant step in the development of bilateral trade and tourism between the two countries.

Google Play Down

Google Play, the official app store of Google is currently down and many users across the world have difficulties accessing its services. Both the mobile and web versions are down.

Read more about it below.

Google Play Store is Down!

The most used and biggest app store in the world, Google Play is currently down. Many users have difficulties accessing its service and more than 2,500 users have reported the issue on Downdetector. Among 48% of the users have reported download-related issues and 47% are facing search-related issues. 5% of the users have also reported purchase-related issues as well.

On Down for Everyone or Just Me, it has been stated that Google’s Play Store is still down and about 84.9% of the users who have reported have mentioned that they are receiving error notifications. 9.39% have reported slow connections while about 5.71% have reported that they are unable to log in to the service.

The reason for this outage is still not clear and Google hasn’t come forward with an explanation for it. It is likely that this outage might be caused due to the server being overloaded, or down or maybe, it might be unreachable due to network-related problems. Maintenance can also be a reason, however as mentioned, the exact or real reason behind it is still not known.

Certain reports state that in India too, users are facing issues, however, the issues are different for different users. Some are facing slow connections and other are not even able to access the service. It has also been reported that in some cases, on restarting the device users were able to access the service, but not everyone was able to resolve the issue with this method.

It’s been 3 hours since the issue has been reported and it’s really high time that Google come forward with an explanation for the outage and when the issue will be resolved. From what it seems, we’ll have to wait to know about it

Canada’s most popular children’s channel known for airing notable cartoons is rebranding next month.

Teletoon is becoming Cartoon Network on Mar. 27, as the channel pivots to Teletoon+, a multi-platform streaming service.

For 26 years, the kid’s channel was treasured and cherished as home to the nation’s leading animations like Total Drama Island, Braceface and Caillou, shaping Canada’s children entertainment across generations.

On Mar 27, Teletoon will officially ride off into the sunset as it will drop its branding and adopt Cartoon Network’s branding moving forward.

To avoid any confusion, the channel currently listed as Cartoon Network on Canadian providers will also rebrand as Boomerang. Debuting in the Canadian market for the first time, but bringing with it scores of fans worldwide, the Boomerang brand stands for the best in retro content, classic animation series, and foundational kids’ programming.

Hence, to explain it more specifically, at the beginning of March 27, Teletoon is set to become Cartoon Network, an iconic kids’ brand known worldwide for delivering the biggest and best in animation. In addition, Corus will also introduce a new kids’ television channel in Canada by relaunching the current Cartoon Network channel as Boomerang.

Though Teletoon is only dying in name, Canadians still expressed their nostalgia on social media to pay homage to the legacy network that provided many kids—and animation aficionado adults—countless hours of entertainment both after school and on sleepless nights.

Google to be Sued by US Justice Department

After the previous two lawsuits filed against Google for its dominance over digital advertising and online search, the Indian government has come forward, forcing Google to bring out a variant of its Google Mobile Services (GMS).

Here’s more about it.

Here are the Four Elements of the New Agreement

As per what the Indian government has instructed OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), they are given two options. They can either release the devices under MADA (Mobile Application Distribution Agreement) or under IMADA. The IMADA will only have reduced requirements.

If the original equipment manufacturers or OEMS release their products under IMADA, the product can only be shipped within India, however, if they decide to release it under MADA, the OEMs will be able to ship it anywhere around the world except in EEA(European Economic Area), Turkey, Russia, and Belarus.

It is to be noted that in EEA or European Economic Area, products can only be released under EMADA, in Turkey under TMADA whereas in Russia and Belarus, it is released under MADA with some modifications.

The second element states that, under MADA, the product will require a total of 11 user-facing apps which includes Google Play Store, Google Search, Google Chrome, Google Drive, Gmail, Google Meet, Google Maps, Google Photos, Google Play Movies, and TV, YouTube, and YouTube Music. On the other hand, the only required app under IMADA is the Google Play Store. IMADA also asks OEMs to include core services like GmsCore and others that are required on the device.

IMADA also doesn’t ask original equipment manufacturers to place a Google Search Bar, a Google Folder, or a Google Play Store icon on the phone’s home screen. OEMs are also asked to place a menu where users get to choose their default search engine on the initial setup page itself.

The last and final element is about the per-app bounty for smartphones having any one of the 11 core apps of Google. However, the details regarding the price and the means through which it is paid are still not clear.

HP had announced its plans to reduce its workforce in the next three years and following this Dell has also decided to cut down about 6,500 of its employees globally.

Read more about it below.

Dell to Cut Down 6,500 Employees from its Workforce

We recently saw layoffs of big tech companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Spotify and others, cutting down its workforce to meet with the increasing expenses that are going out of hands for the companies. We now have Dell, the personal computer manufacturers, planning to layoff 5% of its global workforce which amounts to a total of 6,500 of its employees.

In the month of November, we had also come across HP, one of Dell’s rival companies who had also announced its plans to cut down about 6,000 employees from its workforce in the coming three years. International Business Machines Corp and Cisco Systems Inc. are two other companies which are also planning to layoff its employees

As per what the Industry Analyst, IDC(International Data Corporation) has pointed out, from the 4th quarter of 2022 itself, the sales of personal computers has reduced in a very rapid manner with Dell facing the biggest decline in its sales of about 37%.

With Dell having its revenue of about 55% coming from the sales of personal computers, this lose has affected the company in a very severe manner.

The previous measures taken by the company like stopping of new recruitments to the company and the steps taken to reduce travel expenses has been of no use.

In the recent memo issued to the workers by Jeff Clarke, the Co-Chief Operating Officer at Dell, he has mentioned how the sales continues to decline without any hope in the future.

After the layoff, Dell will only have about 1,26,300 total employees in its workforce, which is the lowest number of employees the company has had in about six years.

Over 2 lakh IT employees in the United States have already been laid off by companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and others and more than 50,000 Indian IT employees will have to find a job in the next 60 days in order to stay there.

Senior executives and employees who have taken managerial places in these companies are also being laid off along with the newly hired employees.

As per a report published in the Times of India, Google and Microsoft have already laid off 12,000 and 10,000 of their employees respectively.

A report in Reuters, also reveals that Spotify is also reducing its workforce by six percent. Microsoft has also laid off a total of 18,000 employees from its workforce.

The Mysterious Cloud that Appeared in Bursa, Turkey

People all around the world were shocked to see a video posted by one of the netizens in Bursa, Turkey which showed a cloud that appeared in the sky which was shaped like a UFO spaceship.

The video became viral very quickly and gained about 1.1 million views in a very short time. Many commented saying that the cloud is really a UFO spaceship and aliens have finally arrived.

The cloud that appeared in the sky, indeed had a circular shape with a hole in the middle, but is not a UFO spaceship, says the Turkish State Meteorological Service.

What had appeared is just a type of cloud called the lenticular cloud. They usually appear at a height between 2,000 and 5,000 meters in the sky and can be expected during Winter. They are formed with strong wind fluctuations when the air in the atmosphere is stable and moist.

The phenomenon is very common in places near a mountain range and Bursa in Turkey is at the base of a mountain range making the phenomenon something very likely to happen in Bursa and there’s nothing unusual about it.

The formation of the clouds is also a signal of precipitation and can be expected in Bursa in the coming days.

The cloud, however, can also be expected at other times of the year as well and is not a phenomenon that only occurs in Winter.

By now, social media is filled with pictures and videos of the occurrence in Bursa, Turkey with a lot of comments regarding the mysterious cloud.
