After a brief dry period, the northwestern parts of India are all set to experience widespread rains over the next four days. The latest forecasts suggests that two western disturbances will potentially impact the Western Himalayan Region and adjoining northwest India this week.

Weather disturbances like snow and rain with isolated thunderstorms, lightning or hail are expected over the Western Himalayan Regions. Moreover, there are also possibilities of very light rain or drizzle over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from March 8 to 10.

Due to such harsh weather conditions, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert to a few of these regions.

There are three levels of alerts- Red, Orange and Yellow in decreasing order of emergency. An Orange ALert indicates the population to be wary of significant damage that might be inflicted due to unsuitable weather conditions.

As per The Weather Channel meteorologists, heavy snow is possible over high altitude regions from Thursday morning to Friday afternoon due to slightly active convection.

Ola electric has recently released official pictures of its new electric scooters.

The company has been working with vehicle and battery manufacturers, cities, driver-partners, and the mobility ecosystem to make electric mobility convenient, dependable, and affordable.

The scooters will be manufactured at the 500-acre production facility in Tamil Nadu. The brand aims to establish the world’s largest electric two-wheeler facility in the southern state in the Krishnagiri district and will roll out two million units per year catering to the domestic needs as well as in Asia, Europe and South America.

The plant will reportedly have a capacity of 10 million units by 2022. In fact, at its full capacity flow, they will be pushing out one scooter every few seconds.

Ola has amped up its efforts to work in the zero-emission space after buying the Dutch-based Etergo BV mid last year and its first scooter will be based on the Etergo AppScooter. Etegro is a lightweight electric scooter manufacturing company.

The Ola Etegro scooter will be quite similar to the Etergo AppScooter and it will more likely have swappable high energy density batteries delivering a maximum range of around 240 km. It could accelerate from zero to 45 kmph in just 3.9 seconds. The Ola electric scooter is expected to have a TFT instrument cluster that will enable 4G support, Bluetooth, WiFi, navigation, OTR updates, Find My Scooter, etc.

The launch of the new scooter is expected to happen within the second half of 2021.

The lightbulb has been one of the most pivotal inventions. Undeniably, it is an extremely important invention that mankind is forever indebted to. But who is credited with the discovery of electricity? This question has been framed multiple times, and the answer comes down to two scientists: Thoman Alva Edison and Nikola Tesla.

A Serbian-American, Nikola Tesla was an inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist. On the other hand, Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman.

Edison is known to many as “The Father of the Lightbulb”, In his early days, He sold the rights to his first invention — an improved stock ticker — when he was only 22 for $40,000. He quit his job as a telegrapher and dedicate himself to inventing.

Edison quickly became a well-established inventor who created and improved upon devices for some of the biggest companies of the time. While he wasn’t just an inventor, though, he was also a good businessman. He founded Edison Illuminating Company, a company that we all know as General Electric these days.

His inventions also included using a phonograph to record sound and projection of moving pictures.

Contrary to popular belief, lightbulbs already existed before Edison, he simply improved on the patents that existed.

However, many dispute that it was actually Nikola Tesla who should be given credit for the lightbulb. After arriving in the United States, Tesla sought out Edison and began working for him. They worked together for a short time, Tesla helped Edison improve his inventions, but ultimately they ceased working together. There were several reasons to have then alluded to his leaving, but one thing was for sure — they disagreed on electrical currents.

Tesla was in favour of alternating currents, whereas Edison sided with using direct currents.

Rather than work together with Tesla to see if his ideas were viable, Edison instead refused the idea and drove him away. When Tesla found investors who believed in his tech and he began to gain attention and fame, Edison set out to defame and discredit Tesla. To prove that Tesla was wrong, he used his high-voltage systems to demonstrate in public on dogs and other animals that AC was too dangerous and deadly.

While all of Edison’s campaigning left Tesla and his investors at a huge disadvantage, in the end, Tesla’s AC system was chosen. He even was able to create the first hydroelectric power plant using Niagara Falls.

Recently, US representative Pramile Jayapal recently tweeted about the wealth tax:

This tweet seems to address a lot of people’s concern over how a wealth tax will be unfair even to billionaires. However, this tweet demonstrates that the wealth tax may be a fair concept to implement.

Jayapal has used the examples of Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Bill Gates, all three self made billionaires, and how the wealth tax would affect their net worth.

She says: “it’s time for the ultra rick to pay their fair share”.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and billionaire has recently said that Tesla would soon double a beta testing program for its self-driving software.

Tesla is not unfamiliar with the competition among electric car makers, and while Ford sold only 3,739 of the new SUVs in February, Tesla’s share of the US electric-car market fell to 69% in the same month. This was down from 81% in the prior year, a Morgan Stanley report found.

When claims of Waymo being better than Tesla began circulating, Musk clarified his own opinion that Tesla has “better AI hardware and software than Waymo.”

Waymo is an American autonomous driving technology development company.

A photo depicting daylight view as well as the luminescence pattern of the sharks

In a recent scientific discovery, three species of sharks have been found to have the property of bioluminescence in the waters of New Zealand, reports The Weather Channel.

Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. This is a very commonly found property among microorganisms, especially with different kinds of plankton and even some other creatures in water bodies. However, this is the first instance of such a phenomenon observed with sharks.

The three species in the spotlight are the kitefin shark, the black belly lantern shark, and the southern lantern shark. The scientists made this discovery while investigating the east coast of New Zealand in January 2020. The study was led by a team of scientists from the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand.

Most of these sharks have been known to live in the mesopelagic zone, or the Twilight zone of oceans and seas, which is devoid of any sunlight for the most part. This zone is located approximately 200 to 1000 metres below the surface of water bodies. About 60 percent of life forms inhabiting this area are found to be bioluminescent.

“Bioluminescence has often been seen as a spectacular yet uncommon event at sea, but considering the vastness of the deep sea and the occurrence of luminous organisms in this zone, it is now more and more obvious that producing light at depth must play an important role in structuring the biggest ecosystem on our planet” reads the research paper.

According to the study, the underbellies of the three species “glow in the dark” and illuminate the ocean floor beneath them, possibly to look for food, while also keeping predators at bay.

Scientists believe the kitefin—whom they refer to as the giant luminous shark—may now be the largest known luminous vertebrate to exist on Earth. Its kind resides at an oceanic depth of 300m. They exhibit the bioluminescent property through their belly, sides, and dorsal fins. The scientific name for the kitefin is Dalatias licha.

We’re all familiar with Elon Musk. Billionaire, founder and CEO of SpaceX, Tesla and The Boring Company and more recently, a big influence on the stocks of certain companies. One of them, and by the looks of it, his favourite, is Dogecoin, and Musk has tweeted about the cryptocurrency yet again.

Dogecoin is a form of cryptocurrency that has recently been in the news due to Musk encouraging people to invest, buy and actively use Dogecoin. While that does not seem very groundbreaking, it is the way the billionaire does it that is most amusing.

Over the past few months, a single tweet or even a meme from Musk’s side triggered the value of Dogecoin to skyrocket to the highest value it has ever experienced.

That brings us to Musk’s most recent tweet regarding the cryptocurrency, which is a simple, yet astute observation:

The tweet was posted at 10:10 AM IST, and according to Coindesk.com, there has been a 3.11% rise in the market cap value of Dogecoin in the last 24 hours.

Whether this has something to do with Musk’s tweet, we cannot say for sure. Although, we cannot say the internet will be surprised if it does.

On Saturday, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) said that scientists have identified a widespread coral bleaching event on shallow, inshore reefs that were previously considered to be less reactive to climate stress.

These reefs were being observed by the WCS around the Solomon Islands. More specifically,  around Marovo Lagoon, including the Zaira Resource Management Area on the western coast of Vangunu Island, and New Georgia Island in Western Province, Solomon Islands.

A map of the Solomon Islands

The bleaching of these corals were first reported in late January, reports Weather.com. This lead to the scientists at WCS organizing a trip to Zaira in February to undertake reef monitoring surveys led by the community rangers within their locally-managed marine area.

The footage received by them this year indicates that the corals in Soloman Island have been responding to increased heat stress, as the water temperatures have risen to 30-degree celsius, even in waters as deep as 25m below sea level.

“It is particularly concerning that very healthy and robust coral reefs in the Solomon Islands, believed to be bright spots in terms of reacting to climate stress, are now showing signs of being affected. This puts more urgency on global leaders going into the UN Climate Conference in Glasgow this year to secure their commitments to reduce emissions to limit global temperature rise,” said Stacy Jupiter, WCS Melanesia Regional Director, reports Weather.com.

On Thursday, the Honda Motor Company Limited unveiled a partially self-driving car, a Legend Sedan, in Japan. This makes it the world’s first carmaker to sell a vehicle equipped with new, certified level 3 automation technology.

However, since this is just the beginning of the new venture; the lease sales are limited to a batch of 100 in Japan and retail for 11 million yen.

Chief Engineer Yoichi Sugimoto informed the reporters that this automation technology is a huge step forward, according to GadgetsNow.com.

The model has a “Traffic Jam Pilot” feature that is one-of-a-kind. It can control acceleration, braking and even steering under specific conditions. In fact, once the system is activated, a driver can use the screen to watch movies or use navigation, which is supposed to help “mitigate the stress” that can often be caused by driving long-distance, said the company in a statement.

The system is also equipped to alert the driver when they have to take control of the car and can do so by vibrating the drivers’ seat. If the driver still remains unresponsive, it initiates an emergency stop protocol by decelerating the car and warning surrounding vehicles by means of the hazard light and horn.
